Whit Monday Holiday
This past Monday was a holiday - Whit Monday. Whit Monday is the day after Pentecost Sunday, Whit Sunday. It is known as Whit Monday because of the white garments that were worn by those baptized on Pentacost. Since Grenada's predominant religion is Catholicism, Whit Monday is a national holiday here in Grenada.
Since schools were closed for the day, it was an opportune day for a hike. Many youth and also some young married couples from the three churches, Limes, Laborie, and Laura, came along the hike. Usually the hike of choice for this day is hiking up Mount Saint Catherine, which at 2,756 feet, is the highest mountain in Grenada. But unfortunately, it has been raining too much lately and it was decided to hike at Concord Falls instead.
Our first stop was actually a place quite close to Concord Falls. We hiked back through tall grass and woods that reminded me of the States. We finally reached our destination - our small, dark hole in the ground that people were beginning to drop into! The small hole in the ground was actually a cave. So one by one, we dropped down the hole (a distance of about 5-6 feet) and then ducked through the cave (which was not very long) until we came out the other end. Then we continued on our hike till we reached the main road again.
The more adventurous people began the long walk up the road to Concord Falls. Others hopped into the buses and trucks right away for the trip up the hill. Concord Falls actually consists of three waterfalls. The first one you can drive to and also has a nice place for swimming. The water at the bottom of the falls is approximately 18 feet deep, so it is a good place for jumping in too! :)
The name of the 2nd Falls is Au Coin, which I had hike to previously and is quite large. But today we were hiking off the beaten path to the lesser known 3rd falls - Fountainbleau. The path there was VERY muddy, but I think everyone made it with only some minor mishaps!

It's kinda hard to see - but here they're going down into the cave. |

We then hiked the treacherous path back down to the first falls, where everyone started jumping in the refreshing water! I was jealous. Soon some girls got brave and decided to jump in also. Since cliff jumping (I'm not sure if this actually qualified) is on my list of things to do before I die, I knew I had to jump in too. :) The jump was about 20-25 feet high into 18 feet deep water. It was quite a rush! After that we had a soggy bus ride back to the Limes and that concluded our day of hiking!
